Bishop leads Christian Foundations Course
Current lay readers, new lay readers, hospital visitors and others from diocese seeking to follow Christ’s call to serve – all gathered for a time of training on August 11 and 12 at St. Augustine Parkland Church in Spruce Grove. Bishop Jane led the training, creating opportunities to interact with each other and with scripture. She encouraged all in the group to push forward to greater understanding and familiarity with scripture, which is a life-long pursuit. The Bishop also inspired each one to discern his or her call and to step into it boldly, trusting Jesus. A previous training weekend was held in June. The text used in the training weekend is called Christian Foundations: A Grounding for a Life of Faith, published by Wycliffe College. Ideal for personal study, this book will provide a common foundation for all licensed ministries in the Diocese of Edmonton. There are still some copies available at the Synod Office for $20. Archdeacon Presents Jesus' Missional Model
What does mission have to do with lay readers? “Everything!” says Richard King, Archdeacon for Mission and Discipleship. King presented the Diocese of Edmonton’s Missional Model to current and new lay readers as part of the training required for their licensing. He described Jesus’ method for teaching his disciples, in which he himself engaged with people as they watched, then nurtured them in their understanding of what he was doing, then sent them out to encounter the power of God as they stepped out in mission, as fresh and uneducated as they were. The result: growth. King explained it is crucial to understand where we’re at as the body of Christ seeking to grow in the 21st Century; that we have moved from a time when Christianity was the primary worldview to a time when the church is only one of many voices competing for the attention of the individual. And he encouraged the group to remember the origins of Anglicanism; that the whole point of the Book of Common Prayer was to provide the Word of God in the common language of the people. For any lay readers who missed it, or anyone else who is interested, an online version of the session will be available soon. St. Saviour's, Vermilion Celebrates Canada 150 Mosaic Unveiling
Canada Day, traditionally celebrated in Vermilion June 30, included the official unveiling of our Canada 150 Mosaic. Between May 8 and 10, 530 young and old participants, which included 17 St Saviour’s parishioners, each painted a 4 x 4-inch tile which, when assembled, created the masterpiece. To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, since 2015 across our nation, including all provinces and territories, over 80,000 paintings and 150 individual murals were created. If united they would form one gigantic mural mosaic which would be over 365 meters wide (4 football fields) x 2.5 meters high (8 feet). Vermilion was one of 15 Alberta communities to participate in the project. Complete information can be found at www.canada150mosaic.com/the-project/ For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.org/news/st-saviours-vermilion-celebrates-canada-150-mosaic-unveiling

BEYOND THE DIOCESE
Opportunity for spiritual growth: Spiritual growth often occurs when we are able to discuss our experiences of God with another person who is trained in reflective listening. This is the primary activity of spiritual direction. The Studion School for Spiritual Direction is now seeking participants to meet with our second-year students to engage in spiritual direction as part of each student’s supervised practicum. If this opportunity interests you, find out more by contacting Shelly King at shellydking@gmail.com. All Saints - Movie Release: Watch your local movie listings for a new release called All Saints, the incredible true story of a persevering pastor and a congregation unlike any you've seen before. All Saints stars John Corbett (Northern Exposure, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, country music singer) as Michael Spurlock, a salesman–turned–pastor whose first assignment is at a quaint country church he is supposed to shut down and sell. Instead, God has other plans! The movie will be released in Canadian theatres August 25. Watch the trailer |
All Saints a Good News Movie
I have been a fan of John Corbett since his work on the TV series Northern Exposure. And I was intrigued to hear he would be playing an Episcopalian priest in a new movie about Burmese refugees in Tennessee. Last night a few members of our diocese joined many (the theatre was quite full) Edmonton faith leaders at an advance screening of the Sony Pictures film All Saints. The film is based on the true story of Michael Spurlock (Corbett), a corporate salesman-turned Episcopalian priest, whose first charge is All Saints, a quaint country church in Tennessee with only a dozen members. His assignment is to close the doors of the struggling church for good and sell its prime real estate. For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.org/news/all-saints-a-good-news-movie
