Social Justice Committee Member Honoured
On Sunday, February 4th, Jim Gurnett (pictured left taking part in Outdoor Way of the Cross, 2016) was presented with The Rev. Marilyn McClung Memorial Award in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the ecumenical landscape of Edmonton.” Gurnett, an active member of the Diocese of Edmonton Social Justice Committee, received this award during the Annual General Meeting of the Edmonton & District Council of Churches (EDCC). After receiving the award, Jim shared his thoughts about his long commitment to ecumenism: “I grew up in a very small corner of Christianity, in a movement called the Christian Brethren. Unlike many Christian communities, we did not worship in a space with a front and a back, but rather in a circle, with the Host on a table in the middle. Those childhood years nourished my pleasure in ecumenism. The circle spoke of a whole world of diversity, no one more or less than another, each worshipping in their own way, but also linked to each other to create the whole circumference...." Italian Christian Discipleship RetreatAnglican Church of the Ascension Cadenabbia Lake Como Italy The Anglican Church of the Ascension, Cadenabbia Lake, Como Italy is hosting a retreat from October 7-12, 2018. Lake Como has always attracted visitors and was set up to serve them. We hope this retreat will provide visitors and church members alike a chance to slow down and reflect about our lives in these very special surroundings. How can we refresh our discipleship and be willing to move forward on our journey of faith? How can we cope with changes in ourselves, our circumstances, the church and the world? These are some of the questions we hope to address through daily worship, bible study, spiritual exercises, discussion groups and times of meditation, as well as visits to sacred places. There will be free time each day for relaxation, walks and companionship and to enjoy the views. Retreat conductor, the Rev. Lyn Philips, is a retired Church of England priest originally from Cardiff. He served in parishes in the Welsh Valleys, Cardiff, London and Wolverhampton and also as a full time hospital chaplain. He is a trained spiritual director offering individual accompaniment as well as quiet days and retreats.
