19 Disciples Complete Short Course in Christian Living
From November 10-12, 2017, 19 disciples of Jesus from several communities gathered at the peaceful Star of the North Retreat Centre in St. Albert for a short course in Christian living. The Men’s and Women’s Cursillo Weekend invited Christians, laity and clergy, to step back from the busyness of everyday life and experience the love of God in a supportive and prayerful setting. The retreat offered a series of talks, music, worship and rest (though, as one participant from Drayton Valley remarked “not enough sleep!”) designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Healing and Remembrance Service Includes Indigenous Ceremony
The third annual Healing & Remembrance Service was simpler this year due to scheduling issues and a large conference. Nevertheless, about a dozen people gathered together in candle light to remember the effects of war or conflict. The evening commenced with Sharon Pasula, Oskapewis/Indigenous Cultural and Educational Helper for the Diocese of Edmonton, Anglican Church, giving remarks about the participation of Indigenous people in the military. She informed the circle that historically when status Natives enlisted they lost their status according to the Indian Act. This meant that when they returned from war, they had no “status benefits” and could not live on the reserve. The Indian Act said if a person leaves the reserve for four years they are no longer considered an “Indian” and cannot live there. Furthermore, they did not receive veterans’ benefits like non-Indigenous veterans did. It was a multiple hardship for Indigenous veterans. Pasula then passed around a smudge and offered a prayer. Cowboy Church
Every Sunday is fun in Wabamun, but Sunday, November 5 the fun-meter was amped up a few notches. The Mission of St. Saviour congregation worshipped in the Cowboy Church way in recognition of all those folks affiliated with the Canadian Finals Rodeo. We prayed for cowpokes, recognized Remembrance Day with prayer, enjoyed a sermon on happiness and then ate! We feasted on rice, chili, Mandarin oranges and, of course, baking. A heartwarming, toe tapping, belly filling good time was had by all. Submitted by Michelle Squance-Slade For more infomation visit:

Christmas Boxes Packed with Hope, Love, Blessings and Beads
Members of St. Saviour’s, Vermilion carefully packed 56 Operation Christmas boxes on November 12. These gifts were blessed by the Rev. Elizabeth Metcalfe, who prayed for the people who prepared them and for the children who will receive them. The boxes will soon begin their long journey to children around the world. Ethan, Alyx and Chelsey placed a special beaded gift in each box. The beaded gifts were made by Christopher, who was known for his kind, gentle spirit and who loved making and sharing his gifts with everyone he met. Sadly, Christopher was called to be with God, but we continue to celebrate and be inspired by him. Beyond the Diocese
Canadian Refugee Policies Facebook Live Event: On the heels of new developments in Canada's refugee system, Citizens for Public Justice, World Renew, the Mennonite Central Committee, and the Christian Reformed Church's Centre for Public Dialogue, will be hosting a Facebook live event sharing information about how to best raise our collective voice for just refugee policies in Canada. Canadians from across the country have opened their arms and their lives to refugees. But although Canada has a global reputation for this welcome, wait times for refugee sponsorship have been discouraging and frustrating for sponsorship groups. It's time to fix these systemic issues and live up to our reputation for leadership. Tune in this, Friday, Nov. 17, from 5-7:00 pm MST, to the Centre for Public Dialogue's Facebook page to hear from a church refugee sponsor, two refugee policy experts, and a justice communicator about the issue of wait times and how you can advocate for a stronger refugee system! Participants are invited to bring a precious item for our prayer table. Suite: $280.00, Single: $240.00, Commute: $190.00. To register, call 780-701-1854. |
