ALPHAWhat's Your Question? Alpha is all about creating a safe place for people to explore life’s big questions. Over the next few weeks, Alpha Coordinator, Amy Croy will be answering your questions about Alpha. This week’s questions are about Alpha essentials. What are the essential ingredients for our Alpha? Prayer, food, videos and discusson! Prayer: God works through the prayer of His people. Pray with your team for the people God puts on your hearts to invite and for love and courage to extend invitations. Food: Every Alpha starts with food. It is the ultimate icebreaker. You don’t have to provide a five course dinner, a simple meal or even some nice snacks will help people feel welcome and relaxed. Video: 3 video series are available for free on Alpha Builder. Discussion: Talking in small group allows people explore questions and build relationships. Are there other 'optional' ingredients that would help create a welcoming environment? Depending on the gifts of your team, you can add other elements to help create a welcoming atmosphere for your guests. Music: Play during meal time. When you introduce Christian music and worship, explain briefly why worship is important to Christians. Fun: Depending on your group’s age and context, you can start with a funny video clip, tell a joke, or do a short icebreaker game. Decor: The way you set up the room, including things like table setup (centre pieces, place settings), signage (welcome sign, menu, food labels) and even lights (candles, table and floor lamps) contribute to the overall guest experience. Is the weekend away essential? Yes, the Alpha Weekend is the part of Alpha that many people say was the turning point in their Alpha experience. For some groups getting away for a whole weekend is not feasible. Do what you can to give your group the best experience possible. Sometimes people can only do a day away. Take your group to a house, cabin, retreat centre nearby – just somewhere different from the usual meeting space. It does take some planning but it’s worth it. Orange Shirt Day in Wetaskiwin
For the past several years people have begun to wear orange shirts on September 30th to remember the children who went to Indian Residential Schools and especially to honour those who did not return to their families. Why an orange shirt? There was a little girl named Phyllis whose grandmother saved up her money and bought Phyllis an orange shirt. This was the shirt she wore to her first day of residential school and it was the shirt that was taken away from her and never returned. A residential school survivor group in Williams Lake, BC heard Phyllis tell this story and came up with the idea of Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters for the end of September; because every child matters, every one of them.
