Buye - Edmonton Dioceses Help Families in NeedDonations Assist Batwa People Suffering from Drought and Famine Our brother in Christ the Rev. Dominique Ciza, Buyé diocesan secretary, shared some wonderful news in a recent email to diocesan treasurer the Rev. John Gee: “I am so pleased to let you know that with the additional funds of $6527.70 CAD, we were able to assist 180 of the poorest families affected by the famine with beans. Almost all of them are Batwa people, recognized as indigeneous people, and others are elderly and widows. Actually, Batwa people are very poor because they don’t have enough land to grow crops, and they used to survive by pottery, but nowadays the pottery products do not have a market. They are being replaced by industrial products. With the assistance, and as we are entering the farming season, they have seeds of beans to sow, and food to sustain them for a while. Bishop Jane Alexander Honoured at U of A Alumni Awards
On the evening of September 25th Edmonton Bishop Jane Alexander, one of 21 “every day heroes who refuse to look away from the challenges around them,” was honoured by the University of Alberta during the 2017 Alumni Awards, held at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. “The diverse group of change-makers we honour tonight have made tremendous contributions to their communities their professions and their families,” said David Turpin, 13th president and vice-chancellor of the U of A. “Despite their differences in background and vocation they share the compassion and drive to make things better, to help those who need it, to improve upon the world around them. A century after founder Henry Marshall Tory demanded that the university uplift the whole people, today’s award recipients put ideas into action and use their education for the public good.” For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.org/news/bishop-jane-alexander-honoured-at-u-of-a-alumni-awards
